Mark is a 1975 graduate of the University of Nebraska with a degree in mathematics and actuarial science, and a 1981 graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School. In 1982, he joined William M. Mercer, Incorporated, serving on its National Defined Benefit Practice Group, which shared national responsibility for the development of that firm’s defined benefit consulting practice. In addition, Mark was Mercer’s Minneapolis pension practice leader for five years. Since leaving Mercer, Mark has consulted on all aspects of retirement planning, health and welfare benefits, and flexible benefits. He has considerable experience advising clients regarding the design, funding, communication and administration of retirement plans. In addition to working with Kelly, Hannaford & Battles P.A. in an “Of Counsel” capacity, Mark is also affiliated with Van Iwaarden Associates, a Minneapolis actuarial consulting firm. Mark is also the Managing Director and founder of Sylvan Benefit Consultants (1995). Mark is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, an enrolled actuary under ERISA and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. He is a frequent speaker on employee benefits topics and has been a lecturer in employee benefits at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.
